По умолчанию в ALT вход под root доступен только по ключу, по паролю нельзя. Или ключ сделайте, или, если относительно безопасно во внутренней сети и это допустимо, разрешите пароль для root в конфиге sshd.
если просто в sshd_config разрешаем PasswordAuthentication yes, без изменения других параметров, то ssh становиться недоступен совсем
